3 Tips to Improve your Pet Industry website for a Quick Win!
A few days ago, I was on a website for a new pet grooming tool I had recently heard about. This new grooming tool was supposed to be great at combing through the topcoat of a dog or cat AND de-shed the undercoat at the same time.
I had to take a look…
What I found was a website with confusing web copy, misspelled words and sentences with incorrect punctuation! (Record scratch) …Whaaat?
Even if you don’t know the 1st thing about websites, you know being able to read your website’s message smoothly and easily is a top priority.
And what makes a website easily readable you ask? These 3 tips here…
- Short sentences
- Proper punctuation
- Correctly spelled words
This may seem obvious, but it happens all the time. Wording on websites that is inconsistent, too lengthy or downright confusing is a death knell to the reader.
A reader, or prospect, is on a website to find out information, but if the information is too difficult to absorb, that prospect will quickly lose interest and click away… that is a loss of a potential customer.
And… potential income for you.
- Let’s start with the 1st tip…Short sentences –Short, easy-to-read and precisely worded sentences are the cornerstones of great copy. They are effortlessly consumed by the reader, (i.e. your potential customer) and will instantly address the issues your reader is there to find out about.
- On to the 2nd tip…Proper punctuation –As great as short sentences may be, if they are not properly punctuated, the entire tone and meaning of the sentence can be lost. A long, run-on sentence can be so much clearer when shortened into 2 or 3 sentences using simply a period.
When a comma is improperly placed, the whole tone and flow of the sentence is gone… the prospect has to go back and re-read the words they just read… this is confusing and too much work. They will lose interest in a flash and click away.
- And finally, the 3rd tip…Correctly spelled words –When people read anything… like a road sign, a menu, a magazine article, a newspaper… they expect every word they are reading to be spelled correctly. How often do you come across a word (or words) in something you’re reading that’s spelled incorrectly and it totally distracts you from what you are reading? Every time, right?
This is the last thing you want to happen when a potential customer is on your website. You want them concentrating on all the great information about your products or services, not focusing on a misspelled word and wondering what else about your company is not up to speed.
All of these tips can be quickly and easily implemented by doing a proofread of your website wording.
In no time at all, you’ll have peace of mind your website is up to date and mistake-free!
